Headbanger at NORMA festival

Headbanger at the Festival Norma 2024. The eighth edition focuses on dance as a lifestyle into which one can fall so deeply that everything else seems unimportant.

Distortion, Overdrive, Fuzz, Boost. Interdisciplinary performance inspired by the phenomenon of headbanging, an iconic dance move, associated with "heavy" genres and their subcultures. A new production by Terén and the artistic collective D'epog.

"We have created a stage performance with the love of musical worlds. Of their genres, sub-genres, and sub-sub-genres, of their cultures, aesthetics, icons, and fetishes. It's an intense physical performance by a five-member performance group somewhere between a concert, a party, a light show, and a dance choreography inspired by headbanging, a cyclical repetitive dance movement, often limited to the upper half of the body or only the cervical spine. Headbanging emerged from a fascination with the theatricality and fiction of music, artistic alter egos, stage identities, costumes, and set design. It was born from the amusement of transgressing the permissible in ordinary reality, obscenity, silly song lyrics, symbols, mythologies, pseudo-spirituals and primordial spiritualities, conspiracies, images of hyperviolence and hypersexism, and commercial countercultures. Headbanger was born from the joy of collectively experiencing concerts, atmospheres, and moments that make us physically react with our bodies. Situations in which we can be emotional, expressive, and spontaneous. Situations in which we can express ourselves without exposing ourselves to judgment. Headbanger is a performance that has gone
through the distortion pedal."

D'epog
D'epog is an art collective working in the field of intermedia based on the practice of performing arts. It operates without a permanent stage and usually presents its projects in non-theatre spaces. The group has been active since 2010 with its base in Brno. It creates staging projects, one-off performances and specific artworks.

Lucia Repašská
She is the director and artistic director of D’epog. She is interested in the phenomenon of actor training, the research of audience perception, and experimental stage work based on site-specific, drama, intermedia, and performance. She regularly presents her work as part of the D'epog ensemble as well as her pedagogical activity (seminars and workshops focusing on the theme of praesentiality, montage, and the problem of dramaturgy of space) at numerous conferences and theater festivals at home and abroad. Lucia Repašská studied theater direction at Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno in the studio of Arnošt Goldflam. In collaboration with the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Brno University of Technology and HumeLAB - Laboratory for Experimental Humanities, she completed her interdisciplinary research on the mechanisms of the autopoietic feedback loop and communication techniques with the publication Umění persvaze.

Jan Matýsek
Visual artist and set designer. He studied scenography at Janáček Academy of Performing Arts. He finished his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in the New Media Studio 2. He completed an internship at the Berlin UdK in the experimental film studio. He mostly works with video installations as experiential environments. He was part of the International Festival PAF Olomouc, and also several group exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad (Germany, Poland, Greece, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine). He held solo exhibitions at Kostka Gallery in Prague's MeetFactory or Galerie TIC in Brno. As a curator, he prepared several exhibitions at the Umakart Gallery in Brno and was part of the curatorial team of the Czech student exhibition at the Prague Quadrennial. He is currently working as an assistant in the New Media 2 studio at the Academy of Fine Arts.

Pasi Mäkelä
Finnish performer, musician, director, choreographer, conceptual artist based in Prague. Mäkelä studied at Turku Arts Academy in Finland, where he received a degree as a theatre director and educator. He is a long-time member of the Finnish theatre communities Reality Research Center and Circus Maximus. He is currently involved in the musical projects The Spermbankers, The Mond and Federsel&Mäkelä. His notable original works include solo performances of Tonttu and Walrus Vampire Show, and projects with his own music/performance collective Sabotanic Garden. He regularly appears as a guest actor, performer or musician in a variety of one-off and staging works.

Jonáš Garaj
Graduate of the Studio of Theatre Production and Stage Technology and the Studio of Lighting Design at the JAMU in Brno. Since 2010 he has been professionally involved in stage lighting and lighting design. In the past, he has collaborated with the National Theatre Brno, Studio Marta, music clubs Fléda and Sono, Studio Alta, Švanda Theatre, Studio 12 in Bratislava, Philharmonic in Rzeszów, Poland, Moravian Theatre Olomouc, Cheb City Theatre, South Bohemian Theatre and Chamber Opera HF JAMU. In his free artistic work he explores the possibilities of light kineticism and working with glass, metal, smoke and technology. One example is the light-kinetic installation TeePee, which he prepared for Prague's Signal festival together with the group Tabula Rasa, or the permanent light installation in the Spektrum bar in Brno. He has been collaborating on technological and design realizations for the Czech club music scene for a long time.v
