The play directed by Mark Ther follows the first and to this day the only production of André Gide’s play Oedipus with the music of Bohuslav Martinů that was realized solely as a radio drama aired in 1936 directed by Jindřich Honzl with the introduction by Vladimír Holan. Gide’s version of the Athenian tragedy updates and radicalizes many of the classical motives and passages by translating the scenic acts into verbal actions. The staging develops the original radio format of this drama and merges the layers of music and theatre. It emphasizes the strength of this play in its formal deviations with a symbolic dimension and powerful casting.
