ruangrupa is a Jakarta based collective founded in 2020 as a response to the lack of space in which artists could work intensively and could direct their attention more to means of analysis and less to means of artistic production. A space that conveyed the ideas of visual art โ which are important to analyse, mediate, and furnish โ like public art, performance art, and video art. The founders felt that this was the only way in which visual art could possess a critical sensibility, which is the most important position of art in society. As a non-profit organization their work and activities link art, social science, politics, technology and media to critically and analytically comment on contemporary issues in a form of exhibitions, festivals, art labs, workshops, publishing, research and education. As a collective, their work and activities have contributed in projects including institutions and exhibitions such the Istanbul Biennal, Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Singapore Bienalle, Sรฃo Paulo Biennal, Centre Pompidou and others. ruangrupa is currently the Artistic Direction of the fifteenth edition of documenta in Kassel, where they build artistic and economic models based on principles of collectivity, resource sharing, friendship and equality.
