The brutal system of Belarusian prisons, which Igor Olinevich describes in his diaries, has its counterpart in other totalitarian states such as Russia or China. In the Czech context, we can encounter similar practices in the totalitarian states of the recent past. However, the current prison system has its pitfalls and risks even in a democratic world.
What are prisons for and how does their social role differ in the Western world, in the totalitarian regimes of Eastern Europe and in other parts of the world? Do prisons help us shape a more just world or do we need to change the way they operate?
And what would happen if prisons did not exist?
