On May 8, Divadlo Setkání will present themselves as the authors of the fourth installment of the year-long series STÁTKY. On Victory Day, they have chosen to tell the stories of three animals that found themselves in close proximity to wartime conflicts. What form of human recognition do the fates of beings who do not “win” in human wars deserve? The performance, inspired by military ceremonies, will be accompanied musically by Šimon Janák and Bolka.

The performance, inspired by commemorative ceremonies, will be accompanied by music from Šimon Janák and Bolka. Following the performance, a discussion on the entanglement of human and animal communities will take place with the creators, Natálie Hončíková from the Department of Environmental Studies at Masaryk University, and Petra Nováková from the collective ResisTerra, which focuses on research into so-called “more-than-human resistance.” The event will conclude with a concert by Samča, brata dážďoviek, who will perform a selection of songs about animals.

Human and Non-Human

Divadlo Setkání has long been engaged with the stories of more-than-human beings and brings this perspective to Victory Day as well. They interpret the national holiday as an opportunity to reflect on the memory of wartime conflicts from an expanded perspective: “Our aim is not to create a heroic narrative of animal heroes, but to open up space for thinking about how our society relates to more-than-human beings. We are interested in how theatre can respond to environmental and social issues without separating art from the world, but rather entering existing systems of care and resistance. In this regard, we are inspired by the thinking of Anna Tsing and her concept of the ‘Art of Noticing’—the effort to pay attention to the stories of more-than-human beings that usually remain outside the main focus of attention.”

About the Collective

Divadlo Setkání is an interdisciplinary collective focused on the stories of more-than-human beings. We connect principles of theatre and visual art with ecologically and socially engaged themes. Through performances, audio walks, and other unconventional theatrical formats, we create space for dialogue between art, science, and community.
